Building Strong Kids
Y Kids was established in April 1988 to fulfill our mandate to provide access to YMCA facilities for needy children. In 2009 we changed our name to Strong Kids. The YMCA Canada national campaign is the Strong Kids Campaign, and we will be updating our campaign to align with Y Canada. All funds raised in the Brandon Strong Kids Campaign will remain in Brandon to benefit children and families in our community.
Supporting Youth in Our Community
Y Kids are referred by YMCA volunteers, the Brandon School Division, Child and Family Services, Big Brothers and Sisters, YWCA, ministers, Mental Health Services, and various other government agencies as well as private individuals.
Strong Kids have opportunities which include: full YMCA Membership, Summer Day Camp, community youth programs, leadership and development programs, Y & School program, Family programs, swim lessons, gymnastics, weight training, sports & recreation, gym and swim.
The Strong Kids campaign is our chance to fully realize and fulfill our obligation to all of the children in our community, not just a select few.
Helping Youth in Need
Last year, the Brandon Family YMCA provided Strong Kids memberships to over 300 youth and assistance to 125 Y & School children.
The Y & School Program
The Y & School program operates in 7 Brandon schools. The program coordinators work with students who need additional support with lifeskills, homework, recreational activities, computers and self-esteem. The program goal is to improve the students’ self-confidence and self-worth.
February is Strong Kids Month
The Strong Kids Campagin kicks off at the beginning of February and runs through the months of February and March.
Approximately 390 Brandon businesses and individuals support the campaign.
Our 2010 goal is $77,000.00.
